On October 9, 2009 (John Lennon’s Birthday), The International Lunar Geographic Society announced that a crater on Luna, Earth’s Moon, has been renamed to honor John Lennon.

The crater, which is located in the Moon’s Lacus Somniorum (“Lake of Dreams”) district, has been given the honorary designation as the John Lennon Peace Crater on the occasion of the 69th anniversary of Lennon’s birth.

Crater Depth: ~990 meters
Lacus Somniorum is a plain located in the northeastern part of the Moon’s near side. It is located at selenographic coordinates 38.0° N, 29.2° E, and has a diameter of 384 kilometers. (It is the largest of the lunar features designated Lacus.) The name is Latin for Lake of Dreams, a title given to this feature by Riccioli.
