Jerry Cantrell’s Dog “Sunshine” Was The 3 Legged Dog On Alice in Chains Album Cover

The album cover for Alice in Chains self-titled album and last with Layne Staley is sometimes referred to as the “Tripod” because the album cover features a photo of a three-legged dog.

The dog named “Sunshine” was actually owned by guitarist Jerry Cantrell. Here’s a great shot of the band with “Sunshine” the dog.

I recently came across another photo of “Sunshine” sharing a sweet moment with Layne Staley.

Alice in Chains kept the 3 legged theme going on the back cover as well by using a photo of Frank Lentini. Lentini was born with three legs, two sets of genitals and one rudimentary foot growing from the knee of his third leg.

Lentini died in 1966.  As for Sunshine the dog, we aren’t quite sure but would love to know.

FYI: Codie Rae, an abandoned German Shepherd rescued by Ralph and Martha Kanz of Oakland, CA, is the three legged dog seen jumping a hurdle in the Patrick Stump video for "Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)" from his new Truant Wave EP. Full details at http://wp.me/pcAJ7-18K
