Josh Klinghoffer sometimes plays this 1967 Sunburst Fender Telecaster Custom that was given to him by his friend John Frusciante whom he replaced in the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Here is a photo of John’s playing one of his Telecaster’s during a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert that shows his distinctive tape/grip job .
There’s not many photo’s of John playing the particular “3 Color Sunburst” he gave Josh, but the guitar was in his guitar rack for either the “Californication” or “By The Way” Red Hot Chili Peppers tours. I assume it was used mostly as a back-up guitar.
Here is Josh playing the ’67 Telecaster that still has the Frusciante’s distinctive tape job.
With the amount of John Frusciante stories here on feelnumb.com you can probably tell he is my favorite guitar player. With that being said, I like Josh Klinghoffer playing and style a lot. He fits in well with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and if he was good enough to make music with Frusciante and play second guitar during the Stadium Arcadium Tour then he must be a damn good guitar player. It’s almost as if Fruciante groomed him to become his replacement.
UPDATE: A feelnumb.com reader claims I don’t “no” what I am talking about.
I guess he doesn’t “no” what he is talking about as Josh Klinghoffer’s guitar tech himself says that John Frusciante did indeed give Josh this guitar in this interview with Premier Guitar. It’s at 24:50 in this video…
I’ll be patiently waiting for my apology. Thank you.
Klinghoffer also played Frusciante’s ’61 Strat. Click below and check it out…
