Noel Gallagher slammed Glastonbury Festival officials in 2008 for booking Hip-Hops biggest act Jay-Z to headline that years festival that failed to sell-out. Gallagher said it was “wrong” for a hip-hop act to be booked to headline the event instead of traditional guitar acts who actually play,
“Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go ‘Kylie Minogue? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If you start to break it then people aren’t going to go. I’m sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.”
I am a big fan of Jay-Z and rap music but his response actually showed his lack of “actual musical talent”. Jay took the stage at Glastonbury holding a muted guitar and quickly made it apparent that he had never played or even picked up the instrument in his life.
He then opened his set singing the Oasis anthem “Wonderwall“, while proving to everyone in attendance that he might actually be tone deaf. His diss obviously backfired as the crowd went crazy and sang “Wonderwall” out loud.
Gallagher later stated that “he liked Jay-Z” and was just giving his opinion. Check out Noel’s interview below.
Jay later made the bad ass track “Jockin’ Jay-Z (Dopeboy Fresh)” produced by Kanye West in which he says,
“That bloke from Oasis said I couldn’t play guitar, somebody should have told him I’m a fucking rock star, Today is gonna be the day that their gonna throw it back to you”
Noel and Jay-Z eventually squashed their beef and both said they would be open to working together. I like them both so kudos to each for eventually taking the high road.
