Tom Morello’s Burned A Custom “Budweiser” Gibson Les Paul Guitar

The story behind Tom Morello’s burnt Gibson Les Paul guitar.

tom_morello_burnt_les_paul_budweiser_logo

“It was during the recording of the last Audioslave album, Revelations. Our producer, Brendan O’Brien, brought a plethora of guitars to the studio. Usually I try to find that one orphan guitar to use, because a lot of times, that’s the guitar you’re going to be able to get some music out of. One day I found this Les Paul sitting in the corner─and I love Les Pauls, of course, absolutely adore them─but the weird and shocking thing was, somebody had painted this hideous, screaming orange beer logo on it. I don’t know if that’s the way Brendan got it, and I certainly have no idea what would have possessed somebody to deface a beautiful instrument in such a horrible way. I mean, a beer logo on a Les Paul? It just isn’t done.

Anyway, it was a late night in the studio, and Brendan and everybody were sitting around playing that shooting game, Halo, so work for the day was basically finished. Something was bugging me about that guitar, though. I felt sorry for it. I wanted to use it, but I just couldn’t bring myself to play it with that beer logo. I tried scraping it off─no dice.

So I decided to get serious and a little inventive about the matter. I went into the parking lot with the guitar and a lighter, and I set the enamel of the guitar on fire. I was surprised that it burnt very slowly. So there I am, having a fine time, watching this beer logo burn, and after a while it didn’t look so bad anymore. Then I took some steel wool to it, sanded it down, and it looked beautiful. And I’ll tell you something: The guitar played and sounded awesome! I wound up using it all over the album.

Here’s the details on the guitar….

2002 Gibson Custom Shop Budweiser Les Paul (051909-1)
Quite a few US corporations commissioned limited run Les Paul’s in the early 2000s, Indian motorcycles, Jim Beam, etc. Anheuser Busch commissioned a very limited run of the “Budweiser King of Beers” Les Paul standard, this example is SN CS22232.

Tom advised, “Now, I’m not advising the kids of America to take lighters to their guitars. That’s only exclusive to Jimi Hendrix and myself. Of course, Jimi never had a guitar with a beer logo on it.”

Four Years After His Divorce Chris Cornell Got His Guitars Back

In December 2008, Chris Cornell reported via his official website that he had finally won back his collection of 15 guitars after a four-year court battle with his ex-wife.  Cornell divorced Susan Silver, who managed his former band Soundgarden in 2004.  But the pair remained locked in a bitter dispute over his musical instruments, which was finally resolved through the courts this year.  Cornell was particularly happy that one of his guitars had been returned.  He said, “(It’s) the Gretsch I played in the Black Hole Sun video (pictured below). I wrote the song thinking the band wouldn’t like it - then it became the biggest hit of the summer.”

Cornell wrote on his official website, “Speaking of guitars. I was just dusting off the 15 or so guitars that I recently had returned to me after the end of a very long lawsuit where someone had decided that maybe the tools of my trade and guitars I played on my entire catalogue should be in their possession forever.”

“It seems to me that some strangely desperate people involved in the music business forget that they are not the ones that write these songs, spill their guts and expose themselves to the public on the most personal level. We invent this s%*t and f*&king own it and no matter what, nothing will change that.”

audioslave_revelations_cover

A special marketing campaign preceded Audioslave’s final album Revaltions release, when the art concept was featured on Google Earth as a fictional utopian island, AUDIOSLAVE NATION, created in the South Pacific. Google Earth is the downloadable virtual globe program that maps the earth by pasting images obtained from satellite imagery over a 3D globe.

audioslave_nation_google_earth

The utopian island of AUDIOSLAVE NATION wass located in the Indian Ocean between South America and New Zealand at approximately 42 degrees longitude and -137 degrees latitude. Fans can access http://www.audioslave.com/audioslavenation to start planning their trip.

Despite the exposure to other forms of media and the positive critical buzz for their third album, Audioslave did not tour behind the release but the AUDIOSLAVE NATION website still works!!!
