Under the pseudonym “Nathanial Hörnblowér” Adam Yauch “MCA” of The Beastie Boys invaded the stage 1994 MTV Video Music Awards as he stormed the stage in costume to protest after R.E.M. won the award for Best Direction over the Spike Jonze directed Beastie Boys video “Sabotage“. In addition to screaming, “This is an outrage! This is a farce,” he also claimed that he had the original idea for Star Wars.
So Kanye West wasn’t the originator… Check it out…
Under the name Nathanial Hörnblowér he also directed the 2006 Beastie Boys concert film Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That!, though in the DVD extras for the film, the title character in “A Day in the Life of Nathanial Hörnblowér” is played by David Cross.
The lyrics in the foldout of The Beastie Boys album “To The 5 Boroughs” is littered with hilarious editors notes pointing out factual errors and general commentary in the rhymes by a Ralph Spaulding better know as director Spike Jonze…
Here are a few examples….
CH-CHECK IT OUT
Mike D - “Like Mutual Of Omaha got the ill boat you’ve never seen before. Gliding in the glades and like Lorne Greene you know I get paid.”
{Editors Note: Mike, I think you are confusing your television facts. Lorne Greene was, in fact, on the show Animal Kingdom.}
CRAWL SPACE
Ad Rock - “No I’m not Herman Munster or Dr. Spock, I go by the name The King Ad Rock”
{Editors Note: But in the song, “So What’cha Want” you said you were Dr. Spock. What happened Benjamin?}
WE GOT THE
MCA - “Eyes on the prize and never wane, Take the bull by the reins”
{Editors Note: You might have well said, “Take the horse by the horns.”
…the best in men’s clothing. Call Paul’s Boutique and ask for Janice and the number is (718) 498-1043. That’s Paul’s Boutique and they’re in Brooklyn.
The Beastie Boys album cover photo for Paul’s Boutique was taken at 99 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002. The album folds out to show an (almost) 360-degree panoramic view as seen from the corner of the Ludlow and Rivington streets. The Paul’s Boutique awning sign was hung on the building specifically for the cover photo shoot (but can clearly be identified as Lee’s Sportswear by the top sign).
Until early 2007, the building contained an eatery inside named Paul’s Boutique in honor of the album it was renamed Three Monkeys.
Here’s part of the fold out section…Beastie BoyAd Rock is standing on the corner. Under that is the same corner now…
Beastie Museum has a whole page dedicated to the Paul’s Boutique corner.
The Beastie Boys made a music video for their song “Gratitude” that is a homage to the film Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii. In addition to copying its directorial style of slow horizontal tracking shots, the video shows the band’s amplifiers labeled “PINK FLOYD LONDON” - just as Pink Floyd’s amplifiers are labeled in the film.

The actual video to “Gratitude” was recorded in Rotorua in New Zealand and not at the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy.
I knew about this when I was in 6th or 7th Grade when this Beastie Boys Hip Hop Classic album License To Ill came out and changed rap for white kids across the world…
Look at the album cover in the mirror and the planes tail number says EATME…Total Frat Boy humor at it’s best but here it is for you to see….
