Kurt Cobain Broke Up With The Girlfriend On Live TV

In 1991, Nirvana and Hole were on tour in the U.K. and Kurt Cobain’s flirtation with Courtney Love was ongoing but musician Mary Lou Lord believed she was Kurt’s girlfriend. When Lord visited the U.K., Cobain couldn’t bring himself to tell her in person so when Lord switched on Channel 4 to watch Nirvana perform on the U.K. show “The Word”, she heard Kurt announce,

“I just want everyone in this room to know that Courtney Love, of the pop group Hole, is the best fuck in the world.”

I guess Kurt didn’t think much of Mary Lou Lord…Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love sent this fax in 1993 as a response to a profile that appeared in a magazine about Mary Lou Lord and her brief but intense relationship with Kurt around the time that Nevermind came out.

But Everett True’s Nirvana: The Biography confirmed that for a time Kurt was telling people how in love he was with Mary Lou, and even dreaming about moving to Boston to be with her.

Kurt Cobain Los Angeles Apartment

In 1992, at the height of his Nirvana fame, Kurt Cobain moved to an apartment in Los Angeles’ Fairfax district.  Kurt put down his guitar, picked up a paintbrush and contemplated a life without music.  For several months he painted using acrylics and oils, but at times he mixed his own blood, semen, cigarette ash and fecal matter into his art.

Here’s a few photo’s of Kurt inside the apartment…

After some research and some help from Kurt Cobain fan Keith Kuramoto we have found the building where Kurt and Courtney lived.

448 North Spaulding Avenue
Los Angeles, Ca 90036

Apparently, the Cobains moved out when they came home from a tour to find that the bathtub had a major leak that had flooded most of the apartment.   Coincidently, that same bathroom is where Kurt wrote the song “Heart Shaped Box.”

Days Inn Chicago - The Place Where Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love First Had Sex

The Days Inn Lincoln Park is nicknamed the Rock & Roll Days Inn for its musician clientele, which includes Sean Lennon, Dave Matthews, KRS One, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Wilco, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana, to name a few….

It is also the first place Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love had sex for the first time and it’s rumored to be the place where the conceived their child Frances Bean Cobain, says Stefanie Hrejsa, general manager of the hotel.  Years later, Love allegedly walked out of the hotel and said she couldn’t stay there because of the painful memories, Hrejsa says.

On October 12, 1991,  Courtney boarded a plane in Los Angeles and flew to Chicago,  she spent her last $10 on a cab to the Metro Club, where she was surprised to find Nirvana on the bill.  She watched the final 15 minutes of Nirvana’s set, which basically involved Kurt smashing the drum kit, all the time wondering what made this boy so angry . After the show she made her way to a backstage party, where she beelined for Kurt.

George Harrison Died At Paul McCartney’s House That He Bought From Courtney Love

When George Harrison passed away on Nov. 29, 2001 the death certificate said the former Beatle had died at 1971 Coldwater Canyon Road in Beverly Hills.  The only problem: There is no 1971 Coldwater Canyon Road there. After an investigation, the L.A. District Attorney’s office has determined that the death actually occurred at 9536 Heather Road, a Los Angeles house once rented and now owned by Paul McCartney.

According to public records, Courtney Love sold her house in Beverly Hills to McCartney in 2001.  Love put the home on the market at about the same time McCartney was in town looking for a new place, according to local brokers. The four-bedroom, French-style home built in the late 1930s closed for $3.995 million. (Love bought the home from comedienne Ellen DeGeneres in 1997 for about $3 million.) The home’s main selling point for celebrities is the privacy it offers: The one-and-a-half-acre property is gated and surrounded by stone walls and tall trees. It also has a private pool.

(The certificate has since been amended.) Gavin de Becker, whose firm provided the erroneous address, calls the probe “a big waste of money and time.” Civil rights attorney Gloria Allred, who filed the complaint that spurred the investigation, disagrees: “No one has the right to falsify public records. There is no celebrity exception in the law.”

Kurt Cobain’s Sonic Blue Jag-Stang Guitar (serial #0000000000-KC) was given to R.E.M.’s Peter Buck by Courtney Love after Cobain died.  Buck can be seen playing it on “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” music video.

Mike Mills, also from R.E.M., plays this same guitar in concert during the song “Let Me In“, which itself is a tribute to Kurt Cobain.  Here’s a clip of R.E.M. talking about playing Kurt’s guitar on “Let Me In”.

The Fender Jag-Stang is an electric guitar designed by Kurt Cobain, intended as a hybrid of two Fender electric guitars: the Jaguar and the Mustang.  Cobain suggested his idea for an instrument to Fender, resulting in two left-handed prototypes built by former Custom Shop Master Builder Larry L. Brooks, only one of which was ever played by Cobain himself.

It has been said that the instrument needed much tweaking before Cobain would have been satisfied with it, and it was shipped back to Fender for repairs before Cobain brought it with him on the European leg of Nirvana’s In Utero tour in 1994, where the guitar was seldom played live.  Many believe that Cobain was ultimately unsatisfied with the result and hence never completed revisions for the instrument before his death in April 1994.

The Rome Hotel Kurt Cobain Overdosed In

On March 2, 1994 Kurt Cobain checked into Suite 541 of Rome’s Excelsior Hotel for a much needed rest in the midst of Nirvana’s world tour. Nirvana had just played what would be their last show the day before at Terminal Eniz (1) in Munich, Germany. Kurt lost his voice on the third song that night, went to a throat specialist who suggested he take four weeks off to rest his voice thus canceling the rest of Nirvana’s European Tour.

On March 3rd, Courtney Love flew in from London to join him in Rome, putting up their daughter Frances Bean Cobain (then only 1½) and the child’s nanny in the suite next door. That evening, Kurt and Courtney ordered a small dinner from room service and settled in for the night. Bothered by chronic throat pain and flu symptoms that had forced him to cancel two shows in Germany the previous week, Cobain took a combination of the prescription drug Rohypnol, a Valium-like tranquilizer available in Europe, and chlorylhydrate, a prescription anesthetic. Then, though he rarely drinks, he shared some champagne with Love, whom he hadn’t seen in a month.

By the time Love awoke the next morning at about 5:30, Cobain was lying on the floor near the bed in a coma.  Between 6:00-6:30 A.M., The Excelsior front desk employees receive a frantic call from Love summoning an ambulance for an unconscious Kurt. He is rushed to the Umberto I Polyclinic Hospital and had his stomach pumped and was then transferred to Rome American Hospital, where he regained consciousness later that afternoon.

Late on the night of March 4 and early the next morning, Cobain drifted in and out of consciousness. That afternoon, he came out of the coma for good. Though new-wire services reported that Cobain’s first request was a strawberry milkshake, when actually it was asking the doctors to “get these fucking tubes out of my nose.”  Kurt had gone slipped into a pharmacological coma due to a combined effect of alcohol champagne) and tranquilizers (Rohypnol) which had been prescribed by a doctor for Courtney, his coma was not due to narcotics.  Gold Mountain (Nirvana’s managment) then issued a statement that Kurt had suffered an accidental overdose.  After being released on March 8th Kurt flew home to Seattle on March 12th.  Here’s a photo of Kurt and Frances at Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle.

In a statement released to concert promoters, the band announced it was postponing its remaining European concerts, explaining, “Kurt Cobain will recover fully from last week’s incident. However, he will need time to recuperate.” But Nirvana will go on.  Said a source close to the group: “The incident, if anything, brings the band closer together, ” but less then a month later Kurt Cobain would be gone forever…
