The Spanish backing vocals are courtesy of Joe Strummer:
“On the spur of the moment I said ‘I’m going to do the backing vocals in Spanish,’…We needed a translator so Eddie Garcia, the tape operator, called his mother in Brooklyn Heights and read her the lyrics over the phone and she translated them. But Eddie and his mum are Ecuadorian, so it’s Ecuadorian Spanish that me and Joe Ely are singing on the backing vocals.”

What Did The Clash’s “Sandinistas” FSLN1 Catalogue Number Mean?

the_clash_sandinista!_FSLN1

Sandinista! is the fourth studio album by The Clash. It was released in 1980 as a triple album containing 36 tracks, with 6 songs on each side.  The title comes from the Nicaraguan left-wing guerrilla organization, the Sandinistas, and its catalogue number, ‘FSLN1‘, refers to the acronym for Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional.

Joe Strummer said he was a Sandinista in 1980 and that is why they named the triple LP after them but by 1984 he said he was distancing himself from the Sandinistas in Nicaragua because he did not like what they had become.

Following along the same note as Sandinista!, The Clash next album Combat Rock had the catalogue number ‘FMLN2′.
