Footage of Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins playing Twister with Crisco lard has emerged. The three minute clip sees the bandss struggling to get to grips with the game, and each other. Krist Novoselic, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, D’Arcy Wretzky and Billy Corgan fail spectacularly to hold a civilised game of Twister for MTV.

Jason Everman was on the cover of Nirvana’s first album”Bleach” and credited as guitarist but he did not actually play on any of the tracks. Everman was impressed by the band’s demo with drummer Dale Crover, and supplied the money for the recording sessions at Reciprocal Recording Studio with Jack Endino. Kurt Cobain said the credit was a token of thanks to Everman for paying a fee of $606.17 to record the album, Krist Novoselic explained, “We just wanted to make him feel at home in the band.” Everman in fact briefly joined Nirvana as a second guitarist playing a few live shows but his album credit as second guitarist was eventually removed in 2009 release of the deluxe version of “Bleach“.

Everman toured with Nirvana the summer of 1989 in support of “Bleach”. A two-song Nirvana session featuring Everman on guitar is available, albeit in separate releases. A Kiss cover called “Do You Love Me?” was released on a tribute album and “Dive” was released on 2004’s With the Lights Out. After Everman left Nirvana in July 1989 he joined Soundgarden the following year as Hiro Yamamoto’s temporary successor on bass.

A Sears-model bass guitar owned by Kurt Cobain as a teenager sold for $43,750 at an auction in 2009. Cobain used the instrument on two early demo recordings he made at his aunt Mari Earl’s house near Seattle during his pre-Nirvana days. The demos, one recorded under the moniker “Organized Confusion” in 1982 and another in 1985 under the name “Fecal Matter“, most die-hard Cobain fans know these demos and the song “Spank Thru” from the 1985 recordings went on to become a staple of Nirvana’s live set and would become Nirvana’s first official song, according to Krist Novoselic.
Here’s the Sears catalog from 1966 showing the same model bass guitar which sold at the time for $114.95.

In between song during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged concert Kurt Cobain asks the audience if they have any requests. During this one minute clip Dave Grohl plays the drum part of “Scentless Apprentice“, Krist Novoselic plays the bass line to “Sliver” and after some guy yells out “In Bloom”, Kurt says, “How are we supposed to play In Bloom acoustic?” Then Krist and Dave start playing the opening lines and Kurt just grins at them.

In 1996, Wal-Mart adopted a policy of not carrying any objectionable materials in their stores. While they continued to sell guns, cigarettes and movies (containing bad language, sex and violence) they made many musicians alter their albums before they would sell them, resulting in “clean” and “dirty” versions of many albums. Nirvana had to change the back cover (remove fetuses) and title listed “Rape Me” to “Waif Me” before Wal-Mart would carry it.

WALMART EDITED BACK COVER (Waif Me)

DGC issued a new version of the album with reworked packaging to the stores in March 1994. A spokesperson for Nirvana explained that the band decided to edit the packaging because as kids Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic were only able to buy music from the two chain stores; as a result they “really want to make their music available to kids who don’t have the opportunity to go to mom-and-pop stores”.
