Jim Morrison died in this rented apartment on 17 Rue Beautreillis Paris, France 75004.  In his short stay in Paris,  Jim went for long walks through the city, admiring the city’s architecture, Morrison grew a beard, and by all accounts, became depressed and was planning to return to the US.   On July 3, 1971, Jim Morrison died in his bathtub at Rue Beautreillis 17.

The Dinner Key Auditorium, in Coconut Grove Miami, Florida was the site of The Doors’ infamous March 1, 1969 concert where Jim Morrison may or may not have exposed himself. The building still stands, now known as the Coconut Grove Exhibition Center the address is 2700 S. Bayshore Dr.Miami, FL 33133.

As the story goes, Morrison missed his scheduled flight into Miami and spent the time waiting for the next flight, drinking in the airport lounge. Once he boarded the plane he continued drinking. During a stopover in New Orleans he missed his flight again and consumed even more drinks waiting for the next flight. By the time he reached Miami he was extremely drunk. Once he took the stage he was almost falling down drunk. He was abusive towards the audience, he would start a song only to stop it after a few lines, he would bum even more drinks from members of the audience. At some point in the concert he then asked the audience, “Do you wanna see my cock?” He allegedly then exposed himself for a brief instant and continued on with the show.

The next day The Doors started a planned vacation. While out of the country, the press in Miami had a field day with the alleged exposure incident. Pressure was put on local officials to do something about it. On March 5 1969, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Jim Morrison on one felony count of lewd and lascivious behaviour and three misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure, open profanity and drunkenness.

Jim turned himself in to the FBI in Los Angeles on April 4, 1969. On November 9, 1969 he entered a not guilty plea in Miami. The trial did not start until August 12, 1970. Much evidence was heard from witnesses for both sides. Most of it was contradictory. On September 20, 1970 the jury found Jim Morrison guilty on the misdemeanor charges of indecent exposure and profanity. He was found not guilty on the felony charge and the misdemeanor for drunkenness. He was released on a $50,000 bond and returned to Miami on October 30, 1970 for sentencing. Jim Morrison died in Paris, France July 3, 1971 before his legal problems could be resolved.

Jim is quoted in “No One Here Gets Out Alive” as telling Circus magazine, “I think I was just fed up with the image that had been created around me, which I sometimes consciously, most of the time unconsciously, cooperated with. It was just too much for me to really stomach and so I just put an end to it in one glorious evening. I guess what it boiled down to was that I told the audience that they were a bunch of fucking idiots to be members of an audience. What were they doing there anyway? The basic message was to realize that you’re not really here to listen to a bunch of songs by some good musicians. You’re here for something else. Why not admit it and do something about it?”

American rock historian Brett Meisner decided, one day in 1997, to stop by his The Doors, Jim Morrison’s grave at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris to pay respects to his hero. As he did so, he asked his assistant to take a souvenir photograph. Almost as soon as it as taken, the picture was forgotten. Five years later, they found it…and noticed a chilling image in the background of, what appeared to be, Jim Morrison himself in a Jesus Christ pose, almost similar to some of his famous photos.

After having the photograph and original negative analyzed by dozens of paranormal and photographic experts, there is still little explanation as to how or why the ghostly image appeared in the photo. “Part of me wishes that I never stepped foot into the graveyard in the first place”, Meisner told the UK’s Sunday Express. His life was never the same after taking it. The photo also brought all sorts of cuckoos to Meisner’s door saying they bared messages from the rock god.

There’s The Doors standing outside the original Hard Rock Café in downtown Los Angeles. The story was that after they took the Morrison Hotel photos, a few blocks away, Jim Morrrison wanted to go have something to drink. It was late afternoon and they decided to drive down to Skid Row where all the bars were. As they drove down there looking for a likely spot to go in, they spotted this Hard Rock Café out of the windows of John Densmore’s Volkswagen van and said “Oh, we gotta go in there!” Here’s the address and what it look like now…

They took some photos inside and outside the Hard Rock Café and used it for the back of The Morrison Hotel album.

The Hard Rock Cafe as we know it now has nothing to do with the bar where the photos were taken. Peter Morton & Isaac Tigrett who founded Hard Rock Cafe were opening up their first restaurant in London and asked The Doors for permission saying “Do you mind if we use the name Hard Rock Cafe? We’re starting a café here in London and we’d like to use the name off your album.” And they said “No, go ahead, fine.”

Two photos are floating around the internet that claim to be the last known photos of a living Jim Morrison.  Morrison died on July 3, 1971.

Jim Morrison flew to Paris in March 1971, took up residence in a rented apartment, and went for long walks through the city, admiring the city’s architecture. During that time, Morrison grew a beard. The ghostly shot captures him staring out of the window of the apartment where he would eventually die and is believed to be one of the last photographs taken of him and shows him sporting the beard.

The Polaroid photo above was auctioned along with his last notebook of poetry.

This photo also shows up as Jim’s last photos.  There were a series of photos taken on June 28, 1971 with his girlfriend Pamela Courson by Alain Ronay. These photos from a village near Chantilly taken a few days before Jim died.  He’s pretty clean shaven in these.

The old Doors offices (now Benvenuto Cafe) were once on the second floor of this building. The ground floor was a studio and the classic album “LA Woman” was recorded here. In fact the restroom in the restaurant is where Jim Morrison laid down his vocal tracks to get a fuller sound.

And on a side note: “Mr. Mojo Risin‘” is an anagram for “Jim Morrison.”

The Cover photo was taken by photographer Henry Diltz at Morrison Hotel at 1246 S. Hope St. (on the corner with Pico) Los Angeles, California. By January 1970, downtown was well into a post-WW II decline of its own, attested by the bleakly deco “ROOMS From $2.50” sign just below a recently shaved Jim on the cover of Morrison Hotel.

Diltz goes on, “We parked the VW van and walked in. I told the guy at the desk we were going to take a few photos and it would take but a few minutes and he said we couldn’t without the owner’s permission and the owner wasn’t there. I thought, You’re kidding! It was a transient hotel and it was empty! I saw him leave the desk and get in the elevator. Right on the cover, you can see the lit elevator numbers right under the ‘son’ in ‘Morrison.’ I said ‘Quick you guys, run in there!’ They jumped right behind the windows and hit their places without shuffling and I shot. I shot one roll of film, starting close to the window, and then I backed across [Hope] street with a telephoto lens. So we finished the whole thing in about five minutes and the guy never saw us. We pulled it off though, like a guerrilla photo shoot.”
