Pat Smear has never forgotten his punk rock roots. After having been a member of Nirvana and an on again, off again member of the Foo Fighters, he still reminds himself of his first band from 1976-1980 Germs.
One of Dave Grohl’s most well known guitars is this custom black Flying-V used in the Foos 2011 “Rope” music video. The history behind this guitar is pretty awesome. It was originally custom built by Dave Dearnaley in Cardiff UK in or around 1984 for Phil Campbell of Motörhead.
I noticed Josh Klinghoffer pull out a familiar guitar during the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert at the Hollywood Palladium. The guitar, close-up looks like an axe a shredder from an 80’s hair metal band would use. Here’s a closer shot of the pink guitar with neon accents…
It’s very subtle, but whenever The Clash performed the song “The Guns of Brixton”, Paul Simonon would switch instruments with Joe Strummer (Simonon on rhythm guitar and Strummer on bass) because Simonon was unable to play the bassline whilst singing lead vocals at the same time.
Two guys in two huge bands both named Adam stuck House of Pain stickers on their instruments. Beastie Boys Adam “MC Ad Rock” Horovitz stuck a House of Pain sticker on his green Hondo II Professional Guitar. Adam Clayton of U2 also stuck an HOP sticker on one of his “Zooropa” era Fender Precision Basses.
On December 3, 2015 I attended a portion of the once-in-a-lifetime Julien’s Auctions curated by Ringo Starr and wife Barbara Bach, featuring items from their London estate, and Beverly Hills and Monaco residences.
If I was able to morph into an 80’s Pop Superhero I would be riding Prince’s “Purple Rain” motorcycle, wearing Michael Jackson’s white glove and I’d be dressed in George Michael’s jeans, boots, aviator shades & leather jacket get from the “Faith” video.
The guitar Frampton principally used on the album and pictured on the album cover is a distinctive black custom 1954 Gibson Les Paul Electric Guitar (with three humbucking pick-ups as opposed to the usual two). It was lost in a plane crash in Venezuela.
Joe Perry married his second wife Billie Montgomery in 1985 after they met on the set of his Joe Perry Project “Black Velvet Pants” video in 1983. Perry loves his beautiful wife so much he had her likeness airbrushed on his guitar.
Dave Grohl on his Black Flag tattoo: “When I was 12 or 13, I gave myself a Black Flag tattoo, prison style, with a needle and pen ink.” Years later Grohl didn’t forget about his childhood heroes and paid homage to Black Flag by playing a Dan Armstrong Luctie Guitar.
