John Lennon, George Harrison and Paul McCartney all chose what famous people would appear photographed with them on The Beatles ”Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album cover.

There were a few other famous people that were supposed to be included in the photo but for different reasons were either never made, obscured or airbrushed out of the final album cover.  A cardboard cut-out of Adolf Hitler was made but was left out of the photo shoot at the last minute.  Lennon had requested Jesus Christ but the cut-out was never made because it was only a few months after Lennon had made his famous “The Beatles are bigger then Jesus” statement.  Below you will find a different photo taken from the Sgt. Pepper photo shoot on March 30, 1967, detailing who was missing from the final product…

1. Leo Gorcey - An American Movie Actor  - He was in the original photo but removed when a fee of $400 was demanded by his agent.  The image used was from the movie “Angels with Dirty Faces”.

2. Mohandas Gandhi - Was removed, because according to McCartney, “Gandhi also had to go because the head of EMI, Sir Joe Lockwood, said that in India they wouldn’t allow the record to be printed”

3. Timothy Carey –  An American Film and Televison actor – Carey’s cut-out is obscured by George Harrison on the album cover and he can only be seen on out-take photos from the session. The image of Carey is from Stanley Kubrick’s movie “The Killing“.

4. Bette Davis- An American Actress – Like Carey, her cut-out was used for the photo but was obscured by Harrison as well.  She can only be seen in photo out-takes from the session.  Her cut-out image was taken from the 1939 movie “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex“.

5. Albert Einstein – His cut-out was mostly obscured in the final photo by John Lennon as only his hair is visible.  Einstein can only be seen in the out-take photos.

Hitler Did Not Make The Final Cut On The Beatles “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” Album Cover

While watching the Queen Live at Wembley Stadium 1986 concert I noticed John Deacon wearing a shirt that said Freddie during “Radio Ga Ga” and I assumed it had to do with Freddie Mercury.

After some research the shirt actually had nothing to do with Freddie Mercury at all.  It is a shirt made from the March 13, 1986 edition of the British tabloid The Sun with the headline FREDDIE STARR ATE MY HAMSTER.

Freddie Starr is an English comedian who became famous in the 1970′s.  FREDDIE STAR ATE MY HAMSTER became one of the most famous British tabloid newspaper headlines of all time and brought Starr much needed attention at the time as his popularity had dwindled.

The weird story was invented by his publicist at the time Max Clifford.  As the story goes, Starr had been staying at the home of Vince McCaffrey (who was co-writing Starr’s biography at the time), and his 23-year-old girlfriend Lea La Salle.  Starr was alleged to have returned home from a performance at a nightclub in the small hours of the morning and demanded that La Salle make him a sandwich. When she refused, he went into the kitchen and put her pet hamster, ‘Supersonic’, between two slices of bread and proceeded to eat it.

“Radio” the debut album by 16 year-old LL Cool J and the first full album released by Def Jam Recordings was released on November 18, 1985.  The album cover featured a photo of a boom box (Ghetto Blaster).

I always wondered what kind of Radio Boom Box was used for the cover photo.  After some research I found out is was a JVC RC-M90 which is still to this day considered “The King” of the Boom Box.

JVC released the M90 Boombox in 1981 and it was the largest and most featured-packed model to date.  It had 8” woofers, 3” tweeters, 8 bands of tuning, Super ANRS noise-reduction and a full logic tape control system.  It also had a Phono input in the back so you can hook up your turntable.  The unit weighed about 22 pounds.  You can still find these units on Ebay but they cost a pretty penny, well over $500.00.

I can’t confirm if this was LL’s actual boombox but I did find this picture with LL and the JVC M90.

Mad Season was a a short-lived Seattle super group featuring Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready with bassist John Baker Saunders and Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin filling out the groups line-up.  The band only recorded one album “Above” which was released on March 14, 1995.  The album cover featured an illustration by Staley based on a photograph of him and his girlfriend Demri Parrott.

Sadly, Demri Parrott died on October 29, 1996 from inflammation of the heart caused by a heroin use.   Layne Staley died in his apartment on April 5, 2002 after injecting a mixture of heroin and cocaine.  Click the link below for that story…

Coldplay and Chris Martin did a classy cover of The Beastie Boys “Fight For Your Right To Party” in dedication to Adam (MCA) Yauch on May 4, 2012 at The Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles California on the day of his passing.

With song titles such as ”I Would Die 4 U“, “Take Me With U” and “U Got The Look” that date back to the early 1980′s was Prince at all responsible for the short code text language we use today?

Before Prince short code (shorthand) was mostly used by journalist and reporters when writing in notepads.  Prince first used his form of short code for song titles way back in 1981 for the song “Jack U Off” from his Controversy album.

It’s pretty clear that Prince did not invent short code but he is somewhat responsible for bringing the short code style into pop culture.  Check out this super long list of Prince songs that use short code in their title…
