In 1969 when Michael Jackson was 11 years old he attended the 6th grade at Gardner Street Elementary School in Hollywood. Three months later Motown released their debut album “Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5,” which set Jackson’s career in motion and his fame and schedule would only allow him to be home schooled. In 1989, Michael returned to Gardner Street Elementary School to see the newly-refurbished auditorium re-named “Michael Jackson Auditorium” with great fanfare.
In 2003, when the King of Pop was charged with child molestation, parents of the children attending the school protested and the sign was covered with layered board.
After his death last year fans began a campaign to have his name revealed and on October 15, 2010 the layered board was removed. “In recognition of Michael Jackson’s musical legacy and contribution to modern culture I have directed our maintenance and operations department to remove the layered board covering the tribute to Mr. Jackson at Gardner Street Elementary School in Hollywood,” said LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines.
