Kurt Cobain had an interest in Buddhism but by all accounts he was considered Agnostic. When he was a teenager he became a Christian for a while, but then abandoned it and claimed to be Satanist and to hate god. At other times he claimed to be an atheist as well.
Cobain did have a penchant for taking photos with religious backgrounds, literally, Religion in the background. Check these out these photos of Kurt mixed with some religious idolatry I came across…
This photo was taken in 1989 while on tour in Europe.
Here’s a photo of Kurt in their old tour van holding a crucifix.
This early shot with a cross in the background was used by Sub Pop for a their promotional photo…
Here’s another early photo of Cobain in front of a church billboard quoting Acts 16:31:
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house”
Here’s a photo of Cobain with a Jesus towel on his face taken on August 17, 1991 at the Nirvana video shoot for ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’.

The band name Nirvana also strikes a religious chord. Here is the definition…
nirvana |nərˈvänə, nir-|noun (in Buddhism) a transcendent state in which there is neither suffering, desire, nor sense of self, and the subject is released from the effects of karma and the cycle of death and rebirth. It represents the final goal of Buddhism.
